Yesterday, we celebrated 15 years of one of the most legendary shows still on Broadway today- Wicked. The hit musical based off of the novel Wicked by Gregory Maguire, which is a spin off of The Wizard of Oz, premiered at the Gershwin Theatre on October 30, 2003. Stephen Schwartz wrote a show that is beloved all over the world- it has been translated into six different languages- and is one of the highest grossing Broadway musicals (second behind The Lion King).
This musical comments on social, political, and ethical themes that many can relate to. Wicked features a timeless score, stunning costumes, and dazzling spectacle.
Monday night, I watched the Wicked Halloween Special on NBC, hosted by the original Galinda (Kristin Chenoweth) and Elphaba (Idina Menzel). This special celebrated the 15th anniversary with performances from the original cast, and featured special guests Adam Lambert, Pentatonix, and Ariana Grande.
There was an especially heartwarming performance that concluded the special. Many of the women who have portrayed the roles of Galinda and Elphaba over the years on Broadway reunited and performed "For Good," a song about friendship and loyalty. Watch this special performance here.
Have a fun and safe Halloween!
