Thankful for Broadway

Writer's picture: Chloe LangChloe Lang

I grew up watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parades on that chilly Thursday morning.

Over the years, what I've looked forward to has changed. When I was little, all I could think about were the large balloons and the fun Disney performers. As I grew older, the Rockettes fascinated me with their synchronized leg kicks and jazz hands. Now, I look forward to just about every performance, but especially the Broadway segments.

The parade is such an awesome opportunity for Broadway to show off for a mainstream audience. There's nothing like getting a little taste of a wonderful show! Here are some of my favorite past performances:

Rodger's and Hammerstein's Cinderella: About seven years after the beloved animated classic Cinderella premiered, Rodgers and Hammerstein adapted it into a stage musical. Featured in this performance are Santino Fontana (the Prince), who voiced Hans in the hit Disney movie Frozen, and Laura Osnes (Cinderella), star of Bandstand and winner of Grease: You're the One that I Want!, and one of my all-time favorite performers.

Anastasia: This was one of my favorite shows I saw in NYC last December! I have yet to see the animated film this musical was based off of, but I absolutely adore Christy Altomare (Anastasia) and Derek Klena (Dmitry).

Something Rotten: I have yet to see this show, but I've heard it's a hoot! I love introducing newbie theatre lovers to this song.

This year, the parade will feature performances from the casts of Mean Girls, The Prom, My Fair Lady, and SUMMER: The Donna Summer Musical. In addition, The Thanksgiving Day Parade on CBS will feature performances from Dear Evan Hansen, Head Over Heels, and King Kong. I don't know about you, but I can't wait!
